Breast Reconstruction Options
Advances in reconstructive plastic surgery have provided surgeons with multiple techniques for use in breast reconstruction surgery. During a breast reconstruction consultation at our Dallas / Fort Worth-area practice, Dr. Antonetti helps his patient to understand all of her surgical options so that she may make educated decisions regarding her care.
The type of breast reconstruction that is used depends entirely on the patient. Taking into account a woman's anatomy and her personal goals for surgery, Dr. Antonetti may recommend breast reconstruction with implants or a procedure called flap reconstruction, in which tissue is transferred from the abdomen, buttocks, or back to the breast area. With implant reconstruction, an expander balloon may be inserted beneath the chest muscle to create space for a breast implant. Flap reconstruction, on the other hand, involves the use of transferred tissue to rebuild the breast mound.
Recovery after Breast Reconstruction Surgery
The recovery experiences of our patients differ according to the type of breast reconstruction a patient has had and her own healing capacity. Soreness in the breast area as well as, in the case of flap reconstruction, the areas from which tissue has been transferred, is common after the procedure. Any pain can be effectively managed using prescription pain medication.
