Abdominoplasty Care Instructions for Patients of Our Dallas Center

For individuals who are troubled by loose skin and isolated fat deposits in the abdominal area, abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck surgery, can sculpt the abdominal profile, making it appear smoother and flatter. The results of a tummy tuck can be very exciting, but it is important to take excellent care of yourself before and after your cosmetic surgery to achieve the best possible outcome with abdominoplasty. During your consultation at our Dallas / Fort Worth-area cosmetic surgery practice, Dr. Alfred Antonetti will provide detailed pre- and post-operative instructions and address any questions or concerns you may have.

Abdominoplasty Pre-operative Care

  1. The night before your surgery, take one antibiotic.
  2. Do not have anything to eat or drink after midnight on the night before your abdominoplasty, including food, water, tea, coffee, juice, mints, or gum. Medications prescribed by your physician are fine.
  3. For 24 hours before and after surgery, do not drink alcoholic beverages. Aspirin products, blood thinners, vitamin E supplements, herbal medications, and herbal teas must also be avoided for two weeks before and two weeks after abdominoplasty surgery.
  4. A responsible adult must be present to drive you home after surgery and spend the night with you.
  5. You should shower the morning of your surgery and wash your hair, but please do not apply any lotion, powder, cream, or deodorant product. Please wear a button or zip-up outfit that is loose and comfortable, nothing that needs to be slipped over your head. You may wear glasses, but not contact lenses. Please leave all jewelry at home.

Abdominoplasty Post-operative Care

  1. Do not wear anything tight on your abdomen. Tight clothing can hinder proper healing after abdominoplasty and cause lines.
  2. You should start with a clear liquid diet, such as soup and crackers, and drink plenty of fluids.  Progress slowly to your regular diet.  This helps prevent nausea and vomiting.
  3. Sleep with two pillows behind your back and two pillows under your knees. This takes the pressure off your abdomen.  Some patients sleep in a recliner for the first week.  You can start to straighten your posture after five to seven days following tummy tuck surgery.  Let your body tell you when it is time.
  4. If you have drains, sponge bathe until your drains have been removed.  You can shower 12 hours after the drains are removed.
  5. Do not smoke until released by Dr. Antonetti.  Smoking delays the healing process.
  6. For six weeks after your abdominoplasty procedure, or until given approval by Dr. Antonetti, do not exercise or engage in any activities that raise your blood pressure.
